Let the planning begin

Well I’m starting to get the itch to do another cross country. Don’t get me wrong I love being on the lake in Maine for the summer but I want to be ready to book when reservations open up. I’m thinking of leaving from Maine right after Labor Day 2024 and being back in Florida mid October Fall of 2024.

This trip will be the second of two trips Jo has agreed to so far. I would like to do some of Route 66 and then head west. I’m not sure if we would have enough time to do Yosemite and the California coast but that sounds great time and distance allowing. Then maybe swing back south and see Bryce Canyon and other Southwest US sights.

To those of you following my blog if you have places and things to see middle America, west coast and Southwest please comment. I’m also looking for the most scenic routes and best (and worst) roads to pull a trailer as I have heard some of the interstates are even worse than I95 in South Carolina!!

More to come but please chime in with any suggestions for the next loop/trip. Stay well and be sure to stop and smell the roses.

Love ya.

Maine lake life
Not in a rush to leave this either. Blessed

  1. Hello Bill and Jo,

Not that we have been there (“The Redcoats are Coming!”), but did your last tour take in The Grand Canyon, and Monument Valley, Arizona?

We have seen that in some recent impressive travelogues and, of course, in a whole host of John Ford’s Western movies.

To change topography completely, have you ever visited Williamsburg, Virginia? It’s a great re-creation of the old city. I had the joy of visiting, when on Royal Navy Staff Course visit to USA / NATO HQs (including CIA and other interesting places), back in ’94. We had a weekend ‘off’ (as the Royal Air Force transport plane had broken down – typical!), so a friend and I went ‘exploring’. In Williamsburg, there was an old (English-type) pub, where there was a historic re-enactment guy singing old sea shanties. When he realised that we knew all the words, and were singing along, Mike and I then took over and had a few songs of our own. All rather 18th Century – pre Revolution, if you see what I mean?

I would really recommend the Shenendoa Valley, too. There are (or were, back in 1994!) some amazing “Hicksville, USA” towns, that are really charming. We, as Brits (and, amazingly, still recognised in 1994, as commercial supporters of the Confederacy!) were made incredibly welcome. Not sure how welcome you “Yankees” would find yourselves! Developing a skill with the banjo (‘Duelling Banjos’ – ‘Deliverance’) may help!

Anyway, there’s some ideas, from ” The Redcoats”!

Let us know how you get on. We’re tempted to come and join you!

    Love,

    Alan and Beth xx

    1. That would be great we’re you to join us Alan. And some of the sites you mentioned are on my bucket list. I’ve seen Williamsburg and the Shenandoah Valley and both worth a re visit

  2. That is a very ambitious trip to complete in 6 weeks. I’ll have to review our trip out west from 2021 to give you our Top Picks! Definitely Antelope Canyon comes to mind, and the Grand Canyon of course. Plus, you are coming from a different angle than we did, heading out of Maine…No matter what you see, it is all an adventure! As you know, we will be following along, and will look forward to some shorter trips in Florida, with you and your best girl, after you return to Naples! ❤
